Blackpool is a borough in Lancashire, northwestern England, on the Irish Sea. Blackpool is a major English vacation resort with an excellent sandy beachfront, an ice rink, golf courses, swimming pools, amusement areas, several piers, an aquarium, and a zoo. The seaside promenade (10 km/6 mi long) is dominated by the Blackpool Tower (158 m/518 ft high), built in 1895, and modeled on Paris's Eiffel Tower. Blackpool became a resort in the 1780s and grew rapidly in the 19th century after the arrival of the railroad. Today it is a major conference and convention center.
